Most of my customers want really clean windows and I’m sure you’re no different. One of the big differences between customers though is the amount of time that passes between cleanings. For some 3 months is almost too long , and for others the windows have not been cleaned in 8 years. Regardless of time between cleanings, windows can look very clean when finished, it just takes a lot more time for the neglected windows and some might have permanent damage that can’t be removed. Beyond the amount of time between cleanings, other important factors are: attention to detail when cleaning, cleaning chemicals, tools used and taking the proper amount of time.
Windows that have not been cleaned for a long time require a lot more time to get the little details. Dirt has had time to settle into the fine cracks, bake into the tracks and edges, and sometimes there is enough dirt to allow plant life to start growing. It can take up to 5x longer to clean windows that have been neglected or not properly cleaned. Windows need to be cleaned at a minimum once every year and preferably 2 times per year. The more they are cleaned the better they look and the longer they will keep that great ‘like new’ appearance.
The best way to explain this is by using a lawn. Everyone has seen the lawn that has been neglected. There is only a vague ghosting of a line where the lawn ends and a flower garden begins. There are lots of weeds and various shades of browns and greens. Mowing a lawn like this will produce an even appearance, but it will not produce a beautiful lawn. Those beautiful lawns take maintenance and attention to detail – they are on a schedule and have the appropriate work performed on a consistent basis.
If you are trying to get your windows clean from a dirty state and want them to be as clean as they possibly can be, remember it takes time – sometimes a lot of time. Once they are completely clean do not wait until they look dirty again, clean them on a consistent basis and pay attention to the details (edges, spots, tracks, tape residue, screens).
There really is no magic to getting clean windows. The trick is to use the best processes, chemicals, tools and take the right amount of time to complete the job. So if your windows are really dirty, spend time to get them cleaned up and then schedule them out to stay that way.
