  • Lessons learned through mistakes; when innovation goes bad.

“Mistakes are a part of being human. Appreciate your mistakes for what they are: precious life lessons that can only be learned the hard way. Unless it’s a fatal mistake, which, at least, others can learn from.” – Al Franken, “Oh, the things I Know”, 2002.

I strive to deliver consistently great service, and deliver a product that exceeds expectations. Part of the process is always looking for new innovative ways to improve on the current processes and procedures. Improve the product and improve profits, its good business right? The problem is, even though a new idea might pencil out fantastic, it doesn’t work and could cost a lot of wasted time in the process.

But is it really wasted? No, it’s invested. It’s only wasted if nothing is learned.

Over the years, some of the best and most innovative ideas I’ve implemented have resulted from some of the most idiotic ideas. Defining what the desired end result is and focusing on the best way to achieve it and not on how bad the idea is, is really a fun process and amazing what is produced through such an exercise.

I have implemented some not-so-good ideas though. The ideas wasted time, money and caused some embarrassment. It’s not something you ever set out to do, but there it is and it happens to a lot of people who are not satisfied with the status quo. Some people want to walk away from it, ignore it. Others dissect it, do a root cause analysis and become intimate with every detail of the process.

I think there is a good middle road here. Really take a good look at what occurred, analyze it and find some solid solutions. Too much analyzing and nothing gets done, almost the same as walking away from it. Find solutions!

Some questions I often use to evaluate an idea are:

    • Safety: does it increase, have no effect or decrease safety?
    • Time: does it increase, decrease or have no effect?
    • Money: increase, stay the same or cost more?
    • Popular: will employees want to do this? Eventually or never?

    Commercial Window Cleaning – Video

Is Window Cleaning Charged by the Hour or the Job?

Question: How much is window cleaning?

“Window cleaning, is it charged by the hour or by the job?”  That is a question we’re often asked, and the answer is…

Beckon Call charges by the job for almost all jobs we do.  I feel there is a few excellent reasons for this:

    • You as a customer know what the job is going to cost prior to start, and any variations that might arise are explained before.
    • In my experience, charging by the job promotes efficiency and increases quality.
    • No need for you to monitor the pace of the work, you can simply check the finished product.
    • Charging by the job promotes the sense of urgency and encourages positive work behavior.

At Beckon Call we are constantly looking for ways to improve our effectiveness and efficiency when cleaning windows, pressure washing, cleaning gutters or other miscellaneous jobs we provide to our customers.

Our goal is to provide the highest level of service with the least amount of disruption to your schedule.

There are many ways to perform any given task, it is our goal at Beckon Call to find the BEST WAY to do each one we do.  The result is unparallelled quality for our customers and a healthy business that will be around for years to come.

    Gardening for Clean Windows

Clean windows allow for a clear view of your beautiful surroundings. Maybe it’s as dramatic as an engineered landscape complete with breathtaking water features or maybe it’s a flower box.

Whatever the landscape is, is it causing your windows to get dirty or obstructing access to get them clean?

Here ate some tips to gardening/landscape maintenance that will help get clean windows:

    • Keep plantings from touching your house. Leave enough space to gain access to window.
    • Lower windows might require a step ladder, leave at least 2 feet of space for the ladder to be set-up.
    • Higher windows that require a ladder need space too, but the space is further away from the house, following the 4:1 rule, for every 4 feet of height the base of the ladder is 1 foot away from the house, for a window that is 20 feet up, the ladder base would be 5 feet away from the house.
    • Walkways, driveways and decks are commonly blown off, ensure when areas are blown they are blown off away from the house.  he stuff being blown can dirty your window faster than a two-year old with an ice cream cone.
    • Window boxes are beautiful, keep in mind when they are not full of plants it will cause rain to hit the soil and splash up mud on the window.  One good rain storm and it will look like you haven’t washed windows… ever.
    • Same as the plantless window boxes, other items can splash up dirty rain water onto your windows and house like Rubbermaid storage containers, barbecues, benches, etc.

    In summary:

Plantings and items around your house may cause your windows to get dirty quickly.  If you notice windows getting dirty a little too fast, take a look at what might be causing it and if possible make some changes.

Access to windows is very important.  If you’re hiring cleaning of your windows out, unobstructed access is lighter on the pocketbook, it’s safer and in the long run provides for cleaner windows.

Do window cleaners need a CCB license?

“Are you licensed with the CCB?”  That’s a question we’re often asked when doing window washing, pressure washing and gutter cleaning estimates, and the answer is: No.

The reason we do not have a license is that the work Beckon Call performs is not covered under the Construction Contractor’s Board (CCB).  In fact, obtaining a CCB license would provide no benefit to our customers.  You can read more about what type of work is required to have a license and what type of work is not required to have a license here: …whoneedslicense.pdf

    Reducing your exposure to risk:

If you are hiring work to be performed at your home or place of business and want to make sure that the company or individual is legitimate, here are things you can do to reduce your exposure to risk:

    • Ask to see certificate of insurance and bond.
    • Ask for references.
    • Do they drive a vehicle with permanent signage?
    • Are they neat and professional in appearance?
    • Check to see if the company has an established website.
    • Perform a Google search on the company name, review the results.

It’s important that you are comfortable with anyone that is working around your home or business.  Ensuring that a company is well established will help protect you from fly-by-night operations and give you some reassurance that if the need to call for follow-up occurs, someone will be responding from the company.

    Window Restoration & Protection

Beckon Call offers a window cleaning process that keeps windows cleaner… longer!  In fact, it’s about as close as you can get to self-cleaning windows.

If window washing is not one of your favorite tasks, yet it keeps getting on your to-do list, this might be an answer to your prayers!

If your sprinklers are leaving hard water marks on your windows, causing unsightly white ghosting – this process can possibly remove the spots and prevent further damage.

    Here’s a video on how it’s done:

Sustainable Window Cleaning: Beckon Call is reducing it’s carbon footprint.

Sustainable processes need to be… well sustainable.  Cost can’t outweigh benefit and so on.  In a previous post I talked about the challenges I had with the first generation green cleaning chemicals and I really did not want to repeat that.  It is counter-productive to implement new processes or procedures that do not work, no matter how good it might sound in theory.

Our current cleaning process uses less water than traditional methods.  Pretty cool, but I wanted more than that.  Yesterday we rolled out a new process, and I think it is going to be great!

A customer gave it the name of “Beckon Call à la carte” and it is our bicycle/trailer set-up.

This is being used in place of gasoline powered vehicles to service business accounts in the downtown core and other flat areas in Corvallis.  The Beckon Call à la carte will be expanded to other areas we service as leg strength and cardiovascular improves… it’s a work in progress.

Beckon Call à la carte is great for the environment.  It reduces fuel consumption, one less vehicle taking up space at our customers location and it’s great for maintaining a healthy body.

There are so many positives to doing this, the only regret I have is… I did not do it sooner!

It was first put into use on Monday March 7th (2011) and so far I have heard a lot of positive comments and appreciation for doing the right thing.  I would like to hear what you think and any ideas that you might have!

New technology gives more payment options to our customers: Intuit GoPayment Rocks!

Intuit GoPayment, Mophie marketplace, iPhone 3GS, Window Cleaning, Beckon Call

Beckon Call is utilizing some very cool technology as a solution for better payment options. The solution is not from just one company though, but three: Inuit, Apple and Mophie.

Beckon Call is a service company that provides window cleaning, gutter cleaning and pressure washing to residential and commercial customers. With most of our payment transactions happening at our customer’s locations, we needed a solution that was convenient, secure and fast. We wanted a true point-of-sale transaction with more options than just cash and checks.

GoPayment is exactly what we were looking for. With GoPayment we can accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express with a quick swipe of the card on our iPhone.

GoPayment is a three pronged solution: Intuit provides the software that drives it, iPhone is the platform it is used on and Mophie’s marketplace is the hardware. It is very cool.

Many of our customers wanted more options beyond cash or check. We wanted more options too, but did not like what was available. Accepting Visa, MasterCard and American Express was not convenient, and the options available were not ideal.

With GoPayment we are now able to easily and securely accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express. Our customers appreciate the convenience!

Now, when a customer wants to pay with Visa, MasterCard or American Express we can handle it. It’s as simple as opening an App, swiping their card, entering the amount and having them sign on the iPhone screen. The receipt can be emailed or sent as a text message to the customer’s phone.

The Mophie marketplace card swiper is sleek and adds about 1″ to the base of the iPhone. The only issue I have is this: there is no case made that fits the iPhone with the Mophie marketplace attached. What’s up with that? If you know of a case that works, let me know!

If you’re interested in pricing of the Intuit GoPayment service you can find it here or for the Mophie marketplace find it here. Best price I found was on Amazon, find it here.

How to prevent birds from flying into your windows.

Bird Flying into a window | why do birds fly into windows?A bird flying into a window is a fairly common occurrence, claiming an estimated 90 million birds per year worldwide.

It’s a sound that just makes my stomach sink, a muted thud on our family room window.  I know I am the one that will have to be the first responder.

If I am lucky the bird will have hit from an angle and ricocheted with minimal damage and be gone.

The evidence left on the window is a hint to knowing what I might find.  I always check that out first.

Not too many feathers stuck to the window is a good sign the bird will be gone or just temporarily stunned.  Usually if there is a lot of evidence on the window, the outcome is not good for the bird.

So why do birds fly into windows?

Birds fly into windows because the reflection looks like a continuation of the landscape.Reflective Windows | Window Cleaning | Why do birds fly into windows?

I’m no expert on bird behavior and tendencies.  But when I look at windows from the outside, especially large picture windows, it does look like a continuation from the landscape.

Simply put, if I was a bird I would probably fly into a window too.

How can you prevent birds from flying into your windows?

Change the perception of what is seen from the birds-eye view.  Here are some ideas:

    1.       Put decorative window decals or Gel Gems on the window.

    2.       Move bird feeders away from large windows.

    3.       Hang a flower basket or other decorative object in front of the window.

These modifications are fairly simple and straight-forward.  Try them out and see which ones work best for you.  You just might notice the birds singing a happier tune.

Scary Windows and Spiders Too! Boo!

Wow, I have encountered a ton of spiders recently while cleaning windows.  I’m sure you have noticed around your house and especially in the corners of your windows that these little guys sure have been busy!

Part of the standard window cleaning is cleaning the edges and ledges around the windows, this really helps to get rid of all the webs, stuck bugs and the yuck that accumulates.  Of course the windows look good without doing this, but giving attention to the detail really makes them gleam!

Screens really need a good cleaning this time of year to remove all the dust, pollen and nasty micro particles that have stuck and accumulated on them.  You might consider just leaving the screens off for the winter.  Packing the screens away for a few months in your garage or attic will reduce damage caused by exposure and will also allow more light into your house.  During these winter months it is great to get as much light as possible during the short hours it is out.

I really enjoy my work!  I’m lucky to be able say that.  If you have a question you think I could provide some help on, please do not hesitate to leave it in the comments area below or E-mail Me!
