  • Ladder Safety Tips

Window washer, window cleaning, ladder safetyAccording to many experts almost all workplace accidents and accidents around the home are preventable.  Don’t become a statistic.

A big part of a window cleaner’s day is on ladders.  Ladders are extremely useful and without them I could not reach a lot of the windows I need to clean.

Staying safe on a ladder is paramount; following are some tips that will help you stay safe on a ladder.

    User:

    1. Be sober.  Do not use ladders while impaired.
    2. Do not use a ladder if you have a medical condition that can cause loss of consciousness, seizures, etc.
    3. Do not use a ladder if you have problems with joint movements.
    4. In hot weather remember to stay hydrated, exposure to heat can cause heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

    Ladder:

    • Use the correct ladder for the job.  If there is doubt ask a professional.
    • Read and understand the labeling on the ladder.
    • Inspect the ladder; make sure it is safe, free of defects and damage.
    • Is the ladder rated for the weight that will be used on it?  Your weight + the weight of any tools, equipment, chemicals you might be using.

    Type III :             200 lbs.
    Type II :               225 lbs.
    Type I:                  250 lbs.
    Type IA :              300 lbs.

    Type IAA :           375 lbs.

    • When using a ladder for electrical work, or near electricity you might strongly consider using a non-conductive fiberglass ladder.
    • When cleaning windows I use a stand-off attached to the top of my ladder.  I choose to use the stand-off’s that are bolted instead of the quick-release ones.

    Environmental:

    • Before using a ladder identify where all power sources are located in the area you will be working.
    • Identify potential hazards:  unstable ground (gravel, soft soil, etc), slopes, wet, animals, traffic, children, etc.
    • Weather conditions can pose a hazard, potential of slipping or losing balance:  Rain, wind, freezing.

Following is a great training video on why to follow safety procedures, and also shows the proper way to set up an extension ladder, check it out: You’re a Pro: Falls from ladders

I use step and extension ladders of varying heights to work each day.  I have learned over the years that safety is often overlooked when time is running short or fatigue is setting in.  I have also learned that cutting corners when it comes to safety can carry some big consequences.

How do you keep yourself safe?  What tips can you share?
