You have spent your time “climbing the ladder” to success and now you are retired. It’s time to retire the ladder, too. That’s just simple risk management.
I have many customers who tell me they just don’t get on a ladder anymore, it’s just too risky. And, with the cost of a hip replacement pushing upwards of $45,000 it could be costly as well.
Not too long ago I was on a roof cleaning a skylight and a passer-by shouted up to me, “I’m glad it is you on the roof, nobody with grey hair should ever be on a ladder or on a roof.”
I don’t think grey hair has anything to do with it, but there is a point in life when the body just doesn’t respond to accidents like it did in earlier years.
I know as time passes I am not willing to do some things I did as a younger man.
Being cautious and following all the tips for ladder safety does not guarantee an accident will not happen. Accidents do happen.
Waking up in the hospital and trying to locate the answer to “What were you thinking?” is not the ideal situation.
From a risk avoidance perspective, getting someone else or hiring a professional to tackle the riskier jobs is a good idea. Finding someone to help can be as easy as asking a neighbor or someone from church. You can still be part of the job if you choose, but with your feet on firm ground instead of above it.
Hiring a professional to accomplish risking jobs like window cleaning or gutter cleaning is not a signal to the world that you are not capable of the job. It’s a signal that you know how to manage your risk and delegate when the situation calls for it.
