  • Cleaning those dirty screens!

Cleaning dirty screens | Window Washing | Window Cleaning | Corvallis, Albany | Beckon CallHave you noticed when you open a window that has a screen outside of it, that it looks like it has been sprayed with dirty water?  It’s because the screens are very dirty and rain has pushed the dirt off the screen and onto the window.  It can make a clean window look bad and quick!  If you are going to spend your money or time cleaning your windows, it’s best to make it count and last as long as possible.

The fix is simple.  If you’re going to clean your windows, the screens will need to be cleaned too.  It’s a step that just can’t be skipped.  Cleaning your screens helps in keeping  your windows cleaner longer and it also makes them less visible, allowing more light into your home.

Screens collect an awful lot of dust, dirt, pollen and other airborne yuck that you really don’t want washing off onto your clean windows, or worse blowing into your house and going into your respiratory system.

A popular method for cleaning screens is brushing them off, scrubbing them, rinsing them and letting them dry.  At Beckon Call we use a little different method and our customers really like how clean the screens are.  Unfortunately, I’m not going to be writing about the process we use at Beckon Call.  But this following process works pretty well!

    How to clean screens:

Step 1: I recommend collecting all of the screens from your home and getting them to an area that they can all be cleaned easily and at the same time (driveway, back deck).   If you’re not comfortable remembering where they all go, mark each with a Sharpie indicating room and window it came from.

Step 2: Take a soft bristled brush and gently brush off each screen, make sure to get both sides and the frames.  Be careful to not breathe in this dust, it is really nasty!

Step 3: Fill a bucket with warm water and a good general purpose cleaner.

Step 4: With a soft brush scrub each screen completely, ensuring to get both sides and all the edges.  Lay them flat on the ground, and stack them up as you go.  When you are completed scrubbing you should have a stack of sudsy, scrubbed screens.

Step 5: Rinse each screen with a strong spray from a garden hose.  A slight fan setting is good, almost a stream – but not quite.  Lean screens against side of house or another object so they are standing upright and drain easily.

Step 6: Wipe each screen dry and reinstall in window frames.

There are many steps Beckon Call uses in cleaning windows, cleaning the screens is just one of the many important steps to ensure a quality job that lasts.

Restore Old Windows – Keep Any Window Clean Longer

Window Restoration, Beckon Call, Window Cleaning,Over time gunk builds up and minerals can eat away at the surface of your windows.  Beckon Call is using NanoUltra Super Hydrophilic Window Technology Products to get windows back to ‘like new’ clean.

NanoUltraTM Super Hydrophilic Window Technology works by using nano cerium oxide to provide both a chemical and mechanical polishing mechanism to polish the glass. Then, a transparent treatment is applied that repels dirt and grime deposits.  When the protected surface is exposed to a water source, the water is transformed into a thin sheeting layer and dirt is easily rinsed away.  During this sheeting action, also called a “hydrophilic” effect, water spreads evenly over the window surface to flush the surface clean, accelerates drying and leaves a virtually spotless finish. The NanoUltraTM Super Hydrophilic Window Technology is a two-step process that first cleans and polishes windows back to ‘like new’ condition then, provides an invisible protection to keep windows cleaner longer than traditional window cleaning products.

    Ladder Safety Tips

Window washer, window cleaning, ladder safetyAccording to many experts almost all workplace accidents and accidents around the home are preventable.  Don’t become a statistic.

A big part of a window cleaner’s day is on ladders.  Ladders are extremely useful and without them I could not reach a lot of the windows I need to clean.

Staying safe on a ladder is paramount; following are some tips that will help you stay safe on a ladder.

    User:

    1. Be sober.  Do not use ladders while impaired.
    2. Do not use a ladder if you have a medical condition that can cause loss of consciousness, seizures, etc.
    3. Do not use a ladder if you have problems with joint movements.
    4. In hot weather remember to stay hydrated, exposure to heat can cause heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

    Ladder:

    • Use the correct ladder for the job.  If there is doubt ask a professional.
    • Read and understand the labeling on the ladder.
    • Inspect the ladder; make sure it is safe, free of defects and damage.
    • Is the ladder rated for the weight that will be used on it?  Your weight + the weight of any tools, equipment, chemicals you might be using.

    Type III :             200 lbs.
    Type II :               225 lbs.
    Type I:                  250 lbs.
    Type IA :              300 lbs.

    Type IAA :           375 lbs.

    • When using a ladder for electrical work, or near electricity you might strongly consider using a non-conductive fiberglass ladder.
    • When cleaning windows I use a stand-off attached to the top of my ladder.  I choose to use the stand-off’s that are bolted instead of the quick-release ones.

    Environmental:

    • Before using a ladder identify where all power sources are located in the area you will be working.
    • Identify potential hazards:  unstable ground (gravel, soft soil, etc), slopes, wet, animals, traffic, children, etc.
    • Weather conditions can pose a hazard, potential of slipping or losing balance:  Rain, wind, freezing.

Following is a great training video on why to follow safety procedures, and also shows the proper way to set up an extension ladder, check it out: You’re a Pro: Falls from ladders

I use step and extension ladders of varying heights to work each day.  I have learned over the years that safety is often overlooked when time is running short or fatigue is setting in.  I have also learned that cutting corners when it comes to safety can carry some big consequences.

Lower part of these windows is covered with hard water spots. Easier and more cost effective to prevent from occuring.

Cleaning is an important part in extending the life and beauty of your windows, but not the only part. A common and easily avoidable problem is hard water spots. They are usually a result of cleaning with hoses or misalignment of sprinklers.

Windows that are washed and rinsed with tap water and allowed to dry, will over time develop visible spots that eventually can completely cloud your window. Automatic sprinklers are a big contributor to many peoples hard water spot problem. The sprinklers cycle on and off, and have enough time to dry usually before there is any chance to notice.

Prevention is the best fix. It is well worth the time to inspect and make the necessary changes to protect your investment. Here are some simple ideas:

    • Turn on you irrigation system and check to make sure the windows are not being watered.  If they are have them adjusted.
    • Do not rinse off your windows with water unless they are being dried right away.
    • A special coating can be applied to add a protective layer on your windows, it lasts up to 2-years and helps prevent particulate from bonding with the glass.
    • Inspect your windows, if you see little dried water drips – there is a problem.  The water has a source and that needs to be identified.

I can help if you have any questions, or have hard water spots that you would like removed.  Once the problem is corrected it is very easy to check every now and then to make sure the cause of the problem has been corrected.
